Work Study project

African Wire Ropes Limited
Kitwe
04.1998 - 06.1998
  • This was a project aimed at, firstly, understanding the wire rope production process and secondly, recommending ways of improving productivity.
  • Standard questionnaires, observation and one on one interview were utilised to gain an insight into the manufacturing process.
  • The aim of the study was to determine the best utilization of both machines and human resources to reduce idle time and the identification of bottlenecks in the operations.
  • The study raised three major points that needed addressing.
  • There was no maintenance plan in place and so they were employing breakdown maintenance, a wrong approach considering that the plant machinery was not independent as production flowed from one section to another, and therefore, a delay at one stage delayed the entire process.
  • The production capacity of the plant was highly utilized because of many machines being dysfunctional due to lack of maintenance.
  • Most of the tools used were worn out and improvised tools were utilised, thereby compromising the quality of the wire ropes.
  • The following were the recommendations to improve productivity at the plant based on the three major findings.
  • Preventive maintenance was to be implemented, which involved routine inspections and activities designed to detect potential failure conditions by adjusting and repairs that prevent major operating problems.
  • This type of maintenance was found suitable because of the substantial coordination of the various production units required in wire rope production.
  • The plant capacity would be increased because of the installation of a preventive maintenance plan, which would lead to a reduction in machine set up and all machines would be operational.
  • Scheduling work to reduce idle time by ensuring that as many machines as possible are working during a given time and preventive maintenance is undertaken only when they are idle, if possible.
  • Replacement of all worn out tools and repair of all damaged ones to improve efficiency and product quality.
  • Maintenance alone could not compensate for poor workmanship, bad designs, poor tools or mal operation of equipment.

Zambia Consolidated Copper Mine Limited (ZCCM)
Konkola
10.1995 - 01.1996
  • I was training to be a craftsman in power electrical through the crafts improver programme that was run by ZCCM.
