Edward Shabani Kateta

This work involves:

• Providing specialist medical services to adult cardiac patients admitted at National Heart Hospital.
• Conducting ward rounds and clinical follow ups for patients receiving cardiac care services and assist Cath-lab interventions offered by cardiologists.
• Supervising and conducting teaching rounds and lectures for students, interns, Senior Resident Medical Officers and doctors undergoing specialist trainees.
• Participating in various government and donor funded programs at Ministry of Health in conducting mentorship and technical support services across Zambia, mainly in cardiovascular diseases, HIV-AIDS, tuberculosis and COVID-19.
• Providing and administering most lifesaving interventions for life threatening cardiac conditions; mainly defibrillation or cardioversion, pericardiocentesis, inotropes or thrombolysis therapy, insertion of central lines and intubation.
• Inserting temporary and permanent dialysis catheters as well as chemoports.
• Interpreting electrocardiography and performing and interpreting stress electrocardiography and basic holter electrocardiography.
• Serving as mentor to medical students and residents, fostering growth in clinical knowledge and skills.
• Performing basic echocardiography; mainly in emergency cardiac conditions.
• Inserting external pacemakers and conducting diagnostic coronary angiography and single chamber pacemaker implantation with supervision.
• Participating in the media information dissemination on non communicable diseases

• The duties performed included doing daily rounds on the medical ward and supervising and mentoring intern doctors in the department of internal medicine, pediatric, gynecology and Surgery.

Accomplishments:

• This helped me acquire emergency surgical skills, mainly in obstetrics & gynecology and general surgery.

• Teaching and participating in the mentorship of Interns and undergraduate medical student.

• The duties were doing daily rounds on the wards and weekly calls.
• Rotations were done in the departments of internal medicine, pediatrics and child health, general surgery, orthopedic surgery and gynecology and obstetrics
• Learned to evaluate and manage patients in stressful environments.
• Exhibited strong clinical judgment skills when triaging patients based on acuity levels, ensuring appropriate allocation of resources during peak times.
• Enhanced patient care by effectively managing and prioritizing caseloads of various medical complexities.
• Collaborated with attending physicians to develop individualized patient care plans, resulting in improved health outcomes.

• Mainly medical emergencies in pediatric, seeing about 20 patients per day
• Prescribed and administered medication, therapy and treatment to prevent and treat illness, injury and disease.
• Ordered x-rays, ultrasounds and laboratory tests when needed.
• Advised patients about diet and hygiene to prevent disease.
• Maintained patient information, medical histories, reports and examination results.
