Civil Tailings Engineer

Zambia Residue Experts is a trusted tailings expert and mining services partner delivering world class outsourced services across the entire mining value chain. The company has been growing its innovative business across the globe and its operations in Zambia. The company’s operations in Zambia provide contractor and consultancy mining services currently for two main clients Kabwe Sable Zinc Mine (SZK) and Roan Copper Concentrate (RCC) formerly Bwana Mkubwa Mine Since 2020 managing a total of 6 tailings dams.

TASKS:

  • Site supervision of TSF construction activities and all associated Infrastructure
  • Assist with GISTM Implementation on all Tailings Facilities
  • In house water and Mine waste management facility design - concept/modelling/engineering design
  • TSF and Return water dams Hydrology and Geotechnical studies
  • Constantly Liaise with our Engineer Of Record (EOR), RTFE and our Technical review board with regards to TSFs and Evaporation Ponds
  • Full suite of TSF Risk management with owner developed online risk-based web management platform in line with latest global standards on tailings management requirements.
  • Drone analysis and planning of surveillance regimes
  • Monitoring of tailings facility performance data.
  • Development of OMS Manuals, TMPs, Tailings deposition plans and monitoring thereof.
  • Technical Report writing and detailing
  • Preparation of Annual TSF Budgets and quotes

ACHIEVEMENTS:

  • Supervising Engineer for the Detailed field and Laboratory Geotechnical Investigation of 150 hectare Chonga Tailings Storage Facility and Pre-Concentrator Plant proposed site.
  • Recommissioning Engineer - Bwana Mkubwa Project Roan Cu TSF complex with a footprint of 200 hectares - 2022
  • Recommissioning Engineer - Sable Zinc Kabwe Cu, cobalt TSF complex with a footprint of 13 hectares - 2021
  • Installation of Roan TSF piping over 1.5km (Tails and Decant lines)
  • Repair of TSF following artisanal miner damage
  • Installation of decant barge
  • Consolidation of Sable Zinc Kabwe TSF tailings dams with a footprint of 13 hectares
  • Outer embankment TSF wall raise Design/Modelling and construction at Sable spanning over 400m and 2m in hight

Project Engineer

Barrick Lumwana Mine is currently busy with the execution phase of the Owner Mining Project in 2023 following its decision to take over its Mining operations from its former Mining Contractor which requires the upgrade and expansion of various laydown areas and infrastructure on site to accommodate new fleet. As part of an outsourced team of Consulting Engineers, I was appointed by Lumwana Mine as Project Engineer for the OMP Project Infrastructure, having a duration of twelve months.

Tasks:

  • Drive and coordinate site activities related to project execution in general, providing daily updates on progress made. Joint-responsibility with LMC project owner to ensure business plan objectives are met in a cost -effective manner.
  • Responsible for stakeholder management on site relating to the project, including but not limited to leading conversations/ meetings/ presentations to end-users/ contractors/ LMC management to ensure project activities are understood, necessary agreements/ approvals achieved, and done so expediently to ensure execution progress is not held up due to the lack of stakeholder engagement.
  • Active involvement in the sourcing and assurance process during tendering stage for each work package, which may include site visits to construction sites/ mine sites and/ or supplier facility visits to provide assurance of skills/ experience/ capacity of the tenderer as it relates to required construction integrity or otherwise general quality of workmanship prior to awarding a tender.
  • Facilitate the onboarding of construction contractors, carefully controlling site establishment and de-establishment within the rule-set of LMC. Safety, Environment, Health, Security and other requirements will be made available for consumption, and to be used for regulating the onboarding process.
  • Manage project work packages such that it is executed within the baseline schedule milestone dates, which may be measured against partially baselined schedules during the early stages of project execution as engineering work matures.
  • Report on the project baseline schedule. Daily progress updates, and critical path risk notifications circulated daily to track and close
  • Participate/ produce, share and archive construction documents, from risk assessments through to commissioning documentation as dictated by- or required for managing construction contracts (FIDIC, NEC, or LMC-specific contract strategies to be confirmed).

Achievements:

  • Successfully developed the Geotechnical investigation Scope and Proposal for the OMP Infrastructure sites - 5x sites for Civil Foundation Design Purposes
  • Interim Geotechnical Supervising Engineer for all OMP Geotechnical field tests - DCP, Profiling, Pit logging, Sampling, etc.
  • Supervised all laboratory Soil testing activities done in-house by Lumwana Geotech lab staff.
