Kelly Chisanga holds a BSc in Chemistry (with Merit) and an MSc in Medicinal Chemistry (with Distinction). As an emerging Lecturer and Researcher at the Institute of Basic and Biomedical Sciences, Levy Mwanawasa Medical University (LMMU) in Lusaka, Zambia, Kelly also serves as the Assistant Director for Research and Postgraduate Studies in the Directorate of Research and Postgraduate Studies (DRPGS) at LMMU. With over eight years in academia, including four years of hands-on research and faculty research administration, Kelly has been instrumental in establishing and managing research administrative units at the university level. Notably, Kelly founded and led the DRPGS at Lusaka Apex Medical University, expanding it to include the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation office, the Director’s Office and three Heads of Department positions within just two years. At LMMU, Kelly spearheads the development of research clusters within schools to enhance faculty-level research activity. Kelly's role includes advancing professional development in research and fostering connections between faculty researchers and leading research institutions. Kelly's research interest and focus are on medicinal chemistry and drug discovery, targeting both infectious and non-communicable diseases of public health significance. Currently, Kelly is a key member of a multinational team investigating the pharmacological safety and efficacy of medicinal plants from Zambia and Mozambique as potential treatments for COVID-19. Recent achievements include serving as a co-investigator on a Pfizer Pharmaceuticals and International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID) funded project, which tested a mHealth intervention to optimize antimicrobial medicine use in Lusaka, Zambia, aiming to improve treatment outcomes. This project involved a multidisciplinary team of researchers, including medical doctors, microbiologists, pharmacists, and chemists. In addition to research and administrative roles, Kelly is actively involved in national and international organization of research programs. Notably, Kelly is member of the scientific committees for the 6th Pan-African Organization for Health, Education and Research (POHER) and the 11th Zambia National Health Research Conference (ZNHRC), both scheduled for November 2024.
