I trained as a Primary Schol teacher in te late seventies. I taught Grade 1 - 3 for five years. i then became a College lecturer for eleven years teaching English. I attended several workshops on Language Teaching run by the British Council. I went for a three months short course in England to learn Communicative Language Teaching. I went back to England to do a Masters in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). I became a Senior Inspector of Schools - Languages, Southern Province, Zambia. I became District Education Board Secretary, Namwala district and promoted reading in schools. I retired and joined the Read to Succeed USAID funded Project in Western province where we improved reading standards from 2012 - 2017. I am now working for the USAID Let's Read Project in Western Province.
Over the years I developed a liking for using Teaching and Learning Aids in the teaching of language. As got drawn to Early Grade Reading, this approach has proved effective. Al the language skills, speaking. listening, reading and writing and all the competencies; phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, comprehension and fluency can better be taught and learnt using Teaching and Learning Aids now popularly called 'Teaching And Learning Using Locally Available Resources' (TALULAR) and this is what I advocate for.
